Lithic Artifacts
Out of the thousands of lithics recovered from the Late Anasazi sites, less than 100 were identified as
being from non-local sources.
Most (62) of these non-local
artifacts were made of obsidi-
an which probably originated
in the Jemez Mountains of
New Mexico. Of the four
samples tested, three origi-
nated from the Jemez Moun-
tains: two from the Cerro del
Medio source and one from
the Polvadera Peak source.
The fourth sample originated
from Wild Hose Canyon in
Utah. Not surprisingly, the
Aztec area sites contained
significantly more (55) of
these artifacts than did the
Mesa Verde sites (7).

Other non-local lithic items consist of Narbona Pass chert from the Chuska Mountains and azurite
from Libsbon Valley, southeast Utah.
