For the Pueblo II and III periods,
archaeologists have defined sever-
al spatial (and presumably cultural)
divisions in the Anasazi world,
including the Mesa Verde and
Chaco regions. As can be seen
from this map, the pipeline corridor
originates in the Chaco Region.
From here it heads north and travels
through the southern foothills of the
La Plata Mountains, an area virtu-
ally uninhabited by the Anasazi
during the Pueblo II-III time period.
After leaving the foothills behind,
the pipeline enters the Mesa Verde
Region, once home to thousands
of Pueblo II-III Anasazi. |

Of course, the correlation between spatial division and cultural region it not actually that straight forward.
In northwestern New Mexico, sites with Mesa Verde influence are found in the La Plata River drainage,
and even the influence of the Chaco Canyon-based culture on the Aztec-area Anasazi varied through
time. In southwestern Colorado, sites with Chacoan influence are found in low numbers throughout much
of the area. |
