Age of Sites:
In New Mexico, two large Pueblo II-III sites are located within roughly 10 miles of the MAPL
project area. These two sites, Salmon and Aztec pueblos, are well-dated through dendro-
chronology. As can be seen from the chart below, the main construction of these pueblos
occurred between 1080-1120. By the time the MAPL sites were occupied, both Salmon
and Aztec had been occupied for 10 years.
In Colorado and Utah, hundreds of Pueblo II-III sites are located within roughly 50 miles of
the MAPL project area. Many of these sites are dated through dendrochronology. As can
be seen from the chart below, the first construction episode at MAPL site 5MT5498 was
during a period (1080-1090) when few sites are known to have been built. However, the
second construction episode was during a period (1100-1140) when many sites are known
to have been built, including the nearby Escalante Pueblo.
