Extra-regional Relationships
Recovered from the
Basketmaker III sites were sev-
eral exotic items: malachite,
obsidian, and marine shell. The
malachite was probably from
southeastern Utah; it may have
been obtained through kin-based
exchange of goods. The obsidi-
an was from Grant Ridge, New
Mexico. The presence of this
material, as opposed to obsidian
from the Jemez Mountains,
which are considerably closer,
suggests ties to groups in the
Grants Ridge area. The marine
shell was probably from the Gulf
of California. This shell appar-
ently came to southwest Colora-
do via down-the-line exchange
between neighboring groups.
